What is Palo Santo?

Palo Santo (in Spanish "Holy Stick") is a mystical, indigenous tree in arid areas of South America.
The tree's spiritual, practical and therpeutic values were known throughout hundreds of years and it was used by the early Incas and by Amazonian shamans to these days.

Read more about the tree...
The tree Bursera graveolens belongs to the same family as Myrrh, Copal and Frankincense, which are classified as Burseraceae. All trees of this family produce aromatic resins. It is native to the tropical dry forests of Ecuador, Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula in Peru.

Palo Santo is a medium-height tree, up to 20 meters (65 feet) tall. The tree produces leaves only in the rainy seasons to survive the arid conditions. Branches tend to grow in the upper parts of the tree. Similar to Pine and Cedar, the tree inhibits growth of grass in its surroundings.

The tree is a favorite habitat to colonies of Brazilian fire ants.

Spiritual Ceremonies With Palo Santo.

For many centuries until today, Shamans, healers and medicine people used Palo Santo smoke for spiritual purification, bringing luck and to clear body and spaces from negative energy. Shamans call it "Mala Energia" (bad energy) or "Evil Spirit". The Palo Santo smoke helps the Shamans to enter the "energy field" of ritual participants.

The use of Palo Santo is dated back to the days of the early Incas.

For cleansing the energy of a ceremonial (or any other) space, use Palo Santo smudge of smoke. The smoke may come from either burning of one or a few wood sticks or an incense stick (for small spaces), or burning (actually fuming) Palo Santo resin on an ember of a charcoal disk for large spaces or to obtain a thorough cleansing.
Move around the space and spread the smoke or fumes. To establish a thorough energy cleansing, allow the space to be actually filled with heavy smoke and leave the space for some time. Avoid breathing dense smoke.

For energetic purification of ceremony participants, move the smudge above and around the head, body, underneath the arms and legs.

Sustainability, Eco Friendliness and Supporting the Community.

Traditionally and also by law, Palo Santo products are obtained only from fallen branches or dead trees that have matured for 4-10 years after their death.
This assures that the valuable, sacred tree will not be harmed due to commercial demand. But there is also another very good reason for that. There is a natural process of curing of the tree sap into the fully potent essential oil. This process only begins when the tree or branch die and lasts a few years. A live tree has absolutely no aromatic or healing value.

If you wish to identify a fully mature, cured Palo Santo wood, look for a rather dark, honey like, deep color. This is a sign of good quality.

It is a native tradition that a newly wed couple should plant a Palo Santo without being seen, to ensure bondage and an eternal marriage.

When you purchase our Palo Santo products you are supporting the native Mayan artisans and their families.
